The owners of the house knew it was time to give their 35+ year old bathroom a face lift. While doing so they had Ephes Kitchen and Bath reinforce the structure under the bathroom by removing the ceiling in the dining room below it. Then adding reinforcement to the existing construction, replacing the ceiling and spackled and painted.

The bathroom was a complete re-haul. New 3o” light colored wood bathroom cabinet with new granite counter top with matching mirrored medicine cabinet. New tiled floor and tub area, new toilet, tub and door frame too. Ephes also repaired a 2′ x 3′ hole in the living room ceiling which was damaged by a leak in the old bathroom.

Counter Cleanliness – Granite is the way to go

If you are concerned about the bacterial contamination of your kitchen counter tops, it looks like stainless steel and granite are the way to go. That’s what a recent study by the Hospitality Institute of Technology and Management, a St. Paul, Minnesota based organization that develops educational materials and research for the food industry shows.

The study measured the bacteria resistance capacity of six common counter top materials. Each surface was contaminated with E Coli (nearly 2 billion of the microorganisms), washed and rinsed with mild soap and water. The results are shown in the data below.

Surface Microorganisms Eliminated by Cleaning.

Stainless Steel; 85,113,804, microorganisms eliminated after cleaning.
Granite; 79,432,823, microorganisms eliminated after cleaning.
Plastic Laminate; 498,884, microorganisms eliminated after cleaning.
Tile; 293,765, microorganisms eliminated after cleaning.
Concrete; 32,810, microorganisms eliminated after cleaning.
Wood; 2,080, microorganisms eliminated after cleaning.
